What are the benefits of joining CFU?
 July 18, 2008

Your membership enables CFU to have a stronger voice to promote a sustainable family farm system at the state and national level!

CFU played a critical role in a nationwide coalition effort led by National Farmers Union to mandate country-of-origin-labeling (COOL) for meats, fruits and vegetables at the federal level. As a result, the new farm bill includes  mandatory country of origin labeling. Mandatory COOL will be implemented by September of this year so consumers can finally know where their food is produced. Mandatory COOL has long been a top priority for CFU. CFU supported state legislation to mandate COOL for meat and it passed both chambers in the state capitol, but it was later vetoed by the governor. Now it is slated to become federal law and this will have a profound impact at the grocery store and on farms and ranches throughout the state and nation.

The farm bill includes many CFU priorities including: substantially increases funding in the farm bill for California producers; includes a competition title to reduce concentration in the marketplace; bans packer ownership of livestock; provides $3.7 billion for conservation programs; and $500 million to promote economic growth in rural America; fosters local food systems and farmers markets; expands organic programs; restores funding for the MILC program and expands eligibility; and increases nutrition funding.

Our strength is in our membership and our membership is growing by leaps and bounds. Last year, a group of farmers in Ukiah came together to form the Redwood Empire Farmers Union. This is the first time CFU has established membership in that region.

Last summer the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations joined CFU adding 140 members to our ranks. CFU joined with PCFFA in opposing the expansion of CAFTA and other failed trade agreements.

Just last month, the Rice Producers of California representing 150 members joined CFU. The Rice Producers have a strong reputation at the state and federal level and we are glad to count them among our membership.

We continue to have a strong relationship with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF). With more than 1000 members CAFF has had great success in linking farmers with consumers throughout the state to foster fresh, healthy and local food systems.

The California Dairy Campaign increased its membership in 2007 and as the founding member organization of CFU it has a fundamental role to play in our growth and success as an organization.
